Hoofing it, stumbling up muddy banks through the brush of the wood.
I'm tracking my mare down, she got spooked by wind through dogwood.

A slight chill in the air, a light rain falls before the storm.
Make peace Golden Slumber, your master means you no harm.

The saddleback sunset casts her silhouette to draw my eye.
Gotta make it before dark fall catches up to her on that high ridge line.

I hear the coy-fox howling into the anxious dusking throes.
The sky growing grim with the sound of din and bellow.

That horse has got my reserves, my camp, I can't bed down.
My matchbox, my whiskey, my smokes, and all the money I found.

The painted void of the gloaming brought the cloudburst that pierce and stings.
I fear it may lay to waste my companion for the feast of the black vulture King.

Or if some dark stranger should greet her before I can make my reclaim,
